Twenty years after approval of the first genetically modified (GM, also called genetically engineered) crops in Canada, information on the amount and prevalence of GM foods and crops is lacking, according to the new report “Where in the World are GM Crops and Foods?” published by the Canadian Biotechnology Action Network (CBAN).

The Canadian Biotechnology Action Network (CBAN) is calling on Health Canada to place a moratorium on approving new genetically modified (GM) foods, to re-evaluate the safety of GM foods already on the market, and to initiate a complete overhaul of the regulatory system. The call comes in response to the republication of a long-term study of a GM corn that exposes a lack of scientific rigour in Canada’s regulatory system.

Press Release - November 14, 2013: (Friends of the Earth U.S.) New study: GMO sweet corn rare in U.S. supermarkets Following CBAN's October 2013 testing that found GM sweet corn in grocery stores, roadside stands and farmers markets (35 percent of samples) across Canada, Friends of the Earth U.S. has released results of their testing of sweet corn samples purchased in the U.S.. Only two U.S. corn samples out of 71 (2.4 percent) tested positive as genetically modified. One of the confirmed GM samples, bought in Massachusetts, was grown in Ontario, while the other, purchased in Colorado, was of unknown origin. GM sweet corn is approved for the market in Canada and the U.S. but remains unlabelled and the extent of market penetration is unknown.

Civil society groups Équiterre, Nature Québec, the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment, Prevent Cancer Now, the Canadian Biotechnology Action Network, and Vigilance OGM denounced regulatory approval of Canada’s first corn and soy crop plants genetically engineered (also called genetically modified or GM) to tolerate doses of the herbicide 2,4-D. The groups say that the new GM crops, developed Dow AgroSciences, will lead to increased herbicide use, with more toxic pesticides in the environment and our food.
