Dear Minister Aglukkaq,

I am writing to ask Canada to take a strong position in support of the ability of countries to label genetically engineered (GE) foods, at this week’s international UN Codex meeting on food labeling in Quebec City, May 3-7.

Health Canada has not made its position public but I understand that Canada plans to oppose the recognition that each country can adopt different approaches for the labeling of GE foods.

If this is Canada’s position, it does not reflect the will of Canadians, who overwhelmingly support mandatory labeling of all GE foods, and it fails to support the majority of countries who already have labeling regimes or want to establish labeling with the support of Codex recommendations.

Canada should immediately establish mandatory labeling of all GE foods. As you know, all consumer polls conducted in Canada show that over 80% of Canadians want mandatory labeling. Despite this strong and consistent demand, our government has continued to oppose mandatory labeling.

I ask you to support mandatory labeling of GE foods in Canada and I ask you to instruct the Canadian government delegation to this week’s Codex meeting to support the ability of other countries to label GE foods as they see fit.

I hope Canada will play a positive role in seeking consensus at the Codex meeting so these important negotiations can continue.
